When to Schedule Your Newborn Photos in Oakville

Between preparing for your baby’s arrival, attending appointments, and getting ready for life with a new addition to your family, knowing when to schedule newborn photos can feel like one more thing on an already full to-do list.

But it doesn’t have to be.

It’s actually one decision that’s much easier to make than you might expect.

Whether you’re expecting your first baby or growing your family, understanding when to schedule newborn photos can help make the entire experience feel calmer, more organized, and much less stressful.

For nearly a decade, I’ve helped families throughout Oakville, Mississauga, and the surrounding GTA plan their newborn photography experience, and one of the questions I hear most often is when they should book their newborn session.

While the answer is usually earlier than most parents expect, planning ahead means you’ll have one less thing to think about once your baby arrives, while giving you the best chance of capturing those those timeless, sleepy newborn portraits so many parents love.

Why Timing Matters for Newborn Photography

One of the reasons newborn photography looks so unique is because babies change incredibly quickly during their first few weeks of life.

Those tiny curled-up poses, sleepy expressions, and delicate details are often easiest to capture while babies are still adjusting to life outside the womb.

During this stage, newborns generally sleep more deeply, naturally curl into comfortable positions, and are often easier to soothe throughout the session.

As babies grow, they become more alert, stretch out more frequently, and may be less interested in sleeping through posed portraits.

That doesn’t mean you’ve missed your opportunity.

It simply means your session may look a little different than the classic sleepy newborn images often seen online

When Should Newborn Photos Be Taken?

The ideal window for newborn photos at McLelland Photography is up to 6 weeks after birth. While many newborn photographers only photograph newborns in a small window between 5-14 days after birth, we offer a more flexible timeline.

Within the first 6 weeks after birth, your baby will likely sleep more soundly, naturally curl into womb-like positions, and be more comfortable with gentle posing.

That said, every baby is different. Some newborns remain wonderfully sleepy, while others become more alert much earlier.

Every session is tailored to your baby’s individual needs, comfort level, and temperament rather than following a rigid schedule.

The goal isn’t to achieve a specific pose at all costs.

It’s to create beautiful, meaningful images while allowing your baby to lead the experience.

When to Book Your Newborn Photographer in Oakville

The ideal time to book your newborn session is during your second trimester or early in your third trimester.

Whether you’re expecting your first baby or adding another little one to your family, planning ahead allows you to spend those first few days getting to know your baby instead of trying to find last-minute availability.

If you have older children, booking early also gives us plenty of time to plan sibling portraits and coordinate around school, daycare, or nap schedules.

Because my Oakville studio welcomes families from Mississauga, Burlington, Milton, Hamilton, Toronto, and communities throughout the GTA, my calendar fills quickly

Booking early gives you the best opportunity to reserve space around your estimated due date.

Since babies rarely arrive exactly when expected, I reserve newborn sessions based on your due date rather than booking a fixed appointment months in advance.

Once your baby arrives, you’ll simply let me know, and we’ll finalize your session within the ideal timeframe.

Scheduling Newborn Sessions Without and With Siblings

If your newborn session will include older siblings, the timing may look a little different.

While the best time for newborn photos is generally within the first 6 weeks after birth, every family is unique.

Depending on your children’s ages and your family’s needs, scheduling your session a little later in that window might be advised if it means creating a more relaxed experience for everyone involved.

For families visiting my Oakville studio, there’s never a one-size-fits-all approach.

Whether you’re booking newborn photos for your first baby or planning a session that includes older siblings, I’ll help you choose a timeline that works best for your family.

Older siblings often feel more comfortable once they’ve had a little time to adjust to life with their new baby brother or sister.

Rather than following a rigid schedule, my goal is to create a calm, enjoyable experience that results in beautiful newborn portraits and genuine family connections.

Don’t Wait Until Your Baby Is Born to Start Looking

It’s completely understandable to wait until your baby arrives before thinking about newborn photography.

After all, you’re already preparing for labour, setting up the nursery, attending appointments, and getting everything ready for your growing family.

The challenge is that those first couple of weeks often pass in a blur of feeding, recovering, and adjusting to life with your newborn.

By the time you begin researching photographers, comparing portfolios, and deciding when to book newborn photos, the ideal window for those classic sleepy newborn portraits may already be passing.

Planning ahead allows you to make these decisions before your baby arrives, when you have more time to explore your options and ask questions.

Instead of worrying about availability or trying to fit a session into an already busy schedule, you can simply focus on getting to know your newest family member while looking forward to preserving these fleeting first days.

Planning Your Newborn Photography Experience in Oakville

Preparing for a new baby comes with plenty of decisions, but your newborn photography experience doesn’t have to add to the overwhelm.

By planning ahead, you’ll have the flexibility to capture your baby’s earliest days while giving yourself one less thing to organize once your little one arrives.

Whether you’re planning a baby-only session or including older siblings, my goal is always to create a calm, fully guided experience that allows you to simply enjoy these special moments together.

If you’re expecting and would like to learn more about newborn photography at my Oakville studio or in-home sessions, I’d be happy to answer your questions.

Once we determine when to schedule your newborn photos, we can plan a photoshoot that’s completely tailored to your family.
